Hardware Requirements: Minimum recommended configuration for ViaVoice Gold:

- Processor performance equivalent to Intel (R) Pentium (R) 166 MHz
without MMX (TM) or 150 MHz with MMX, or faster
- A VoiceType (R)-supported industry sound card, such as Creative
Labs Sound Blaster 16-bit, or 100% compatible sound card
- 32 MB minimum RAM for Windows 95, 48 MB minimum RAM for Windows NT
- 100 MB to 150 MB additional hard disk space, depending on the

Compatibility: ViaVoice Gold preserves your speech patterns (enrollments), macros, and vocabulary from VoiceType Simply Speaking, VoiceType Simply Speaking Gold or ViaVoice.
- ViaVoice Gold and its files should not be compressed with disk
- ViaVoice Gold may not work with all processor boards.
- It is recommended that the customer use the microphone in the
product package from IBM or one of the microphones that have been
tested and certified acceptable.
- The latest installation and configuration considerations are contained on the IBM Speech Systems Technical Support Internet Web page at:
As for processor speed, faster machines provide a quicker response to any user-initiated function, whether it be by keyboard or spoken commands. On a faster machine, you will notice all speech recognition functions completed faster. For example, if you speak at a specific dictation rate, then the system will translate your speech into text at a faster rate. Conversely, rapid input on a slow processor will cause a delay before the dictated text finally appears on the screen. The faster the processor, the shorter the delay.
If you use relatively large programs (such as a word processor) with the speech recognition system, you need sufficient RAM for both programs to reduce excessive swapping. Excessive swapping may reduce recognition rates also. In addition, sufficient contiguous disk space and a 32-bit file system greatly improve the ability to do swapping rapidly.
Refer to the Technical Information section for a recommended hardware configuration.
Customer Responsibilities: The customer must provide at least the minimum hardware and software environments in which ViaVoice Gold will operate.
It is recommended that the customer use the microphone in the product package from IBM. Your accuracy rates will probably be higher due to the noise-cancelling technology on the microphone.
If you prefer a different microphone, care should be used since the choice of a microphone can influence speech recognition accuracy. An alternative microphone should be very high quality and designed for close range pickup to reduce background noise. The microphone must have a flat audio frequency response range. One sample of microphone characteristics, which have been tested with Simply Speaking Gold or ViaVoice, is given below:
- Type: Electret
- DC Input Voltage: 2.5 to 5 V DC
- Frequency response: 50 Hz to 15,000 Hz
- Polar pattern: Bidirectional, with opposing lobes added with a
180(degs) relative phase shift for noise cancellation.
- Impedance: 2.2 Kohms (with 2.2 Kohm collector resistor)
- Output level:
- 20 mVp-p @ 2.5 V DC Input
- 40 mVp-p @ 5.0 V DC Input (@ 104 dB SPL, 0.5 inches from sound source)
- 20 mVp-p @ 2.5 V DC Input
- Sensitivity: 63 + 3 dB (0 dB = 1 V/ubar at 1 KHz)
- Andrea Electronics
- ANC-100, 200, or 500
